During the winter on Sommroy, a small Norwegian island that lies north of the Arctic Circle, the sun does not rise. And for 69 days in the summer, it does not set. Needless to say, the inhabitants of Somaro have a different concept of time than those living in parts of the world where the hours of the day are divided into darkness and light.

"This Norwegian island wants to be the world's first time-free zone"

A resident said, 'We aim to provide complete flexibility 24/7. 'If you want to mow the lawn at 4 in the morning, you can.'

Hweding is among those who wish to see time end on Somaro. Last week, he presented a Norwegian member of parliament with a petition, signed by the island's residents, asking for Sømaro to become the world's first time-free zone. The proposal is "sparse on details", according to Gizmodo's Ryan F. Mandelbaum, and O'Hare notes that boosting publicity for the tourist destination "may be a primary objective of the campaign.

But in practice, living on a time-free island could mean stores will open when employees are available, school hours will be flexible and, reports Joseph Breen of the National Post, there will be no clocks.
